World Dairy Expo celebrated 50 amazing years in Madison, Wis., this year. This was only my second time traveling from California to attend Expo, but I don’t plan on missing any more in the future.
What made me decide it’s a “must see?”
Here’s a list of my Top 5 Memories of the Golden 50th Celebration. Maybe it will convince you to attend:
Cows: The world’s most beautiful show cows gather during this week to compete in their respective breeds. I could sit and watch the cows parade on the golden shavings all day because I love testing my eye in the large classes to pick the winners.
It was a great week watching Musquie Itaola Martha — the Jersey exhibited by MilkSource Genetics out of northeast Wisconsin — win Supreme Champion. She was quite a cow!
Friends:  There’s nothing that brings more dairy enthusiasts together than the Expo. Even after coming all the way from California, I had the chance to reconnect with friends that I made years ago during summer conventions with the National Holstein Association. I am constantly amazed at how small our industry sometimes feels.

I ran into many old friends as well as made new ones — and what united all of us was our passion for the dairy cow.
Food: You can’t come to Wisconsin and not eat dairy products!
World Dairy Expo is known for a grilled cheese and milkshake booth that is run by the Badger Dairy Club from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The ice cream parlor is also a must, even if only to check out the flavors of the day. This year my favorite was the 50th Anniversary flavor named “Carmel EXPO-losion,” which was available every day of the week.
Shopping: Whether you’re looking for the industry’s latest milking technology or Christmas presents for your family, Expo has it all.
My favorite artist booth to visit is artist Bonnie Mohr’s, a woman who grew up milking cows and truly captures these moments in her work. You can also buy all your Expo logos at the Purple Cow booth.
Networking:  With more than 800 companies exhibiting during the week, the event makes for perfect networking opportunities. There’s something out there for everyone as the companies are all specific to many dairy niches and span the entire globe in reach.
Start planning your trip now for next year because this is an event you don’t want to miss. World Dairy Expo, congratulations on 50 wonderful years and many more to come!
